We visited Ruutos hair salon and to celebrate their newly added bridal package, we created the Ruutos signature Afro up-do.

Here, the founders of Ruutos, Ruben and Lucy (husband and wife) share their journey from being one of the first companies to sell lace wigs in South Africa back in 2010, to becoming one of the most trusted salons by many naturals like Hulisani Ravele and Aisha of Aisha and life.

Tell us about Ruutos

“Ruutos was established in 2008 and started operating as a business in 2010. We started by selling premium quality lace wigs, and hair extensions. At the time, we were one of the few people who were selling wigs, in wig styles inspired by celebrities like Beyoncé. We operated in a mobile kind of service and within a year, our clientele grew then we moved into our first shop that we currently occupy.”

When did you decide to open a salon?

“We notice a pattern of women who bought wigs to actually hide hair-loss. And of course the itchy scalp that came with wearing a wig. Our background in Metallurgical Engineering (Lucy) and Mathematical Statistics (Ruben) forced us to not only notice but also be on the lookout for how our clients can maintain their hair better.”

Ruutos was one of the first companies to import and sell Jamaican Black Castor Oil in South Africa.

“During this time I was transitioning, my scalp was dry and while searching for a solution I came across JBCO. And we became one of the first people to import and sell JBCO in South Africa. At the time we were sponsoring Big Brother Africa, so the word on JBCO spread even wider. But JBCO alone was not a good enough solution for hair care and some people had allergic reactions using it. So we created our own mixture, and balanced ingredients to accommodate those with sensitive skin types.”

Ruutos product range includes combos for specific hair needs like healthy hairline combo and Kids hair combo.

“During this time we noticed that after helping our clients combat hair issues, they would walk out and find themselves back to square one when they use their products at home. So we created products and packaged them in a way that makes it easy for our clients to continue hair care at home. And that was the birth of the Scalp Magic combo. Later we added more product combos to cater for more hair types and solve more hair problems like hairline issues and dry hair. Learning through our clients we were able to help more other women out there.”

Ruutos products include a range for Kids hair care

“It is important for kids to use their own dedicated products like shampoos with surfactants that are mild on their fragile scalp, hair and skin. Our kid’s products were created to provide kids with products that are gentle for kids.”

Ruutos hair treatments

“We do a lot of protective hairstyles and with that must come treatment for the hair. When you treat your hair, you give it elasticity, which is much needed especially during a protective hairstyle. Our hair treatments include a scalp and moisture treatment, a protein treatment and a hot oil treatment.”

Where can we buy Ruutos hair products?

“We have social media consultants and independent associates. Ruutos product combos include: Dry scalp, Anti-breakage, Natural hair, Hairline and Kids hair combo. Ruutos has now added”

What is Ruutos most popular hairstyle?

“Our most popular hairstyle is the Afro up-do. Our clients love that is a low manipulation versatile protective hairstyle.”

“Weaves, wigs and hair extensions will always be there to enhance our looks. The most important thing is taking care of your hair regardless of how you wear it. And it just makes sense to learn how to take care of something that God gave to us naturally.”

What do you have to say about the changes in hair trends from when you sold lace wigs to the recent natural hair movement?

“Weaves, wigs and hair extensions will always be there to enhance our looks. The most important thing is taking care of your hair regardless of how you wear it. And it just makes sense to learn how to take care of something that God gave to us naturally.”

What do you love the most about what you do?

“Seeing that we can be able to meet the needs of other people, making women feel beautiful and creating employment.”

What inspired the name Ruutos?

(Both laughing) “Ruutos comes from both our names Ruben and Tosin, although many people think it is Ruutos from the roots. Which we do not mind, it fits in perfectly with what we stand for.”
