Going natural can be a challenge, from adjusting your hair care routine to using new products. But it’s not as painful as you think it might be. Here, we share 5 ways of caring for your natural hair and great news for natural hair products.
Use the right products
Try to use products without harsh chemicals. Look for products that contain natural ingredients such as tea tree, coconut or rosemary oil. Use a shampoo that moisturises your hair and that is also sulphate free. Hair loses moisture easily and washing sometimes strips the natural oils, so it’s important to replace the moisture. A good conditioner is also essential.
Wash your hair at least once a week (see our washing tips here), use products that can replace your natural oils lost through the shampooing process. Washing often reduces dandruff as dandruff is sometimes caused by not replenishing the lost oils.
Treat your hair
Treat your hair at least twice a month, you can either do treatments at the salon or at home. If you prefer to do your hair at home, use hair mayonnaise (you can get it from Clicks) Hair mayonnaise is great for your hair protein. Try a detox treatment which will cleanse your hair and scalp over time.
Check your food
Healthy natural hair is more than what you apply on it, it is also about what you eat so you might want to change your diet a bit. You need to ensure that you eat enough protein and include a variety of fruits and vegetables so your body gets all the vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients in needs.
Most of us usually get frustrated by how long it takes for natural hair to grow, so in desperation, we go back to relaxing (I know! I have done it). Keep it mind that the first 6 to 8 months of growth after relaxing are not your hair’s natural curl pattern. The scalp and follicles are still healing so they need to make it through the scab hair period and into your real hair texture. Once you’ve made it through this patch, you’ll have softer hair. Don’t be too hard on yourself and your mane.
